We may not see our country often figure in the top of the rankings among European Union countries, but in terms of garbage, Cypriots are in first place.

The Cypriot produces more than half a ton of municipal waste per year, which ranks us in second place, according to data published by Eurostat for 2017.

Specifically, the average amount of municipal waste generated per person in the European Union for 2017, is estimated to have reached 486 kg.

First in the ranking with the creation of most household waste per capita is Denmark with 781 kg, second Cyprus with 637 kg per capita and third Germany with 633 kg. Greece is a little above the average with 504 kg, while Romania with 272 kg, Poland with 315 and the Czech Republic with 344 kg per person seem to be more aware of the production of household waste at the other end of the scale.

"Every citizen has an obligation to contribute to waste management, the first stage of which is to become a green consumer, ie to buy only what he needs and to avoid packaging, and of course citizens must be informed exactly how we must separate our waste. "so that we can recycle properly", said the Environment Commissioner, Ioanna Panagiotou.

At the same time, according to the Environment Commissioner, the state is implementing its own strategy based on reducing waste production, source sorting, reuse, recycling and composting.

"The state should offer the necessary tools, especially to the local authorities, information to the citizens so that they know what to do. "With the new year, the system" I pay as much as I fly "will be implemented", added Mrs. Panagiotou.

It is pointed out that recently the Minister of Agriculture announced the creation of a number of Green Points, the imposition of deterrent fines for illegal dumping of garbage and the creation of infrastructure for better waste management.
