In the modern era, with the ever-increasing use of the internet and the services it provides, digitization in all areas of human activity and the widespread use of social media, the management, security and protection of personal data becomes even more important , said the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Dr. Athina Michailidou.

In her greeting at the award ceremony of the Student Painting Competition "Protection of Personal Data in the School Unit", she emphasized that the importance and value of our personal data is indisputable.

He noted that since 2018, Cyprus has fully harmonized with the General Data Protection Regulation, which applies to all member states of the European Union, protecting natural persons against the processing of personal data and the free movement of such data.

"In this context, our Ministry, through the Office of the Data Protection Officer, has developed and communicated to school units a specific policy for the implementation of this Regulation, emphasizing the protection of children's personal data, as children may they are less aware of the risks, the consequences but also their rights", he added.

The Competition, he said, was organized in collaboration with the Office of the Personal Data Protection Commissioner, which is the independent public Supervisory Authority charged with monitoring the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation as well as other regulations concerning the protection of citizens from the processing of personal data.

He expressed the certainty that the Painting Competition that was organized gave the students the opportunity to not only be informed about their right to the protection of personal data, but also to develop their creativity and express themselves through their works .

Student Award

The award ceremony of the Painting Competition "Protection of Personal Data in the School Unit", which was organized by the Office of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, took place on Friday.

As stated in an announcement by the Office of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection, high school and high school students of Public and Private Secondary General and Secondary Technical and Vocational Education and Training had the right to participate in the competition. The evaluation of the competition projects was carried out separately for the high school cycle and for the high school cycle. 10 projects were submitted for the high school cycle and 19 projects for the high school cycle.

It is noted that prizes worth €150 for the 100st Prize, €50 for the XNUMXnd Prize and €XNUMX for the XNUMXrd Prize were given per cycle. Prizes were also given to the projects that received a Commendation.

At the award ceremony, the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection expressed "special thanks to the children, who give their souls every time, offering us unique creations that adorn the cover of our Office's annual exhibition, but also constitute the anniversary poster for the international personal data day which is January 28".
