On Monday, the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth Athena Michaelidou and the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus discussed the subject of sex education in schools, but also the issue of education in general.

The Holy Synod met yesterday Monday, in the first regular session of the year, under the presidency of the Archbishop of Cyprus Georgios, and the Minister of Education was also invited to it on the subject of the sex education course.

According to a statement from the Holy Archdiocese, the Holy Synod was informed by the Minister of Education and officials of the Ministry, who had been invited for this purpose, about the course of sexual education in schools.

In the discussion that followed, it was emphasized again, by the members of the Holy Synod, that it is understandable that children today have access to many sources (internet, etc.) from where they can receive wrong information on the subject this and, therefore, a responsible information of them is needed.

"It was emphasized, however, that the age of the children should be taken into account at every stage of information, the morals of society and our country, the suggestions of the parents and how non-teachers should be excluded from the lesson and the school", it is added.

According to the announcement, the general issue of Education, its levels and aspirations was discussed with the Minister of Education, while questions and suggestions were submitted to which the Minister gave answers and analyzed the plans of the Ministry.

During the session of the Holy Synod, the reports of the High Priests on their participation in the inter-church and inter-religious dialogues were also filed. The reports will be studied by the members of the Holy Synod, who will also submit their opinions.

Finally, the Holy Synod ratified the sentence imposed on the former priest Petros Christodoulou, from Panagia Paphos, by the Six-Member Synodal Court, of removal from the priestly office and his reinstatement in the ranks of the laity, due to his failure to recognize any ecclesiastical principle.
