Canadians under the age of 39 make up the vast majority of new cases Covid-19 recorded in Canada, health authorities warned today urging young adults not to feel "invincible" in the face of the disease.

"Recent national follow-up data show that, of all ages, young adults between the ages of 20 and 39 have the highest incidence rates of the disease in Canada," said Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer.

For the week ended July 22, the incidence rate was highest in young men and women aged 20 to 29 years (14,4 and 13,8 cases per 100.000 people, respectively), followed by those in the age group 30 to 39 years old.

"Young Canadians are not invincible" in the face of the disease, Dr. Tam warned, stressing that the elderly were not the only ones at risk of serious health problems if infected.

This proves the finding that from its cases Covid-19 referring to public health last week, "63% involved young people under the age of 39, of whom a third (31%) were hospitalized".

There were an average of 485 new cases reported each day across the country in the last week.

As the easing continues in Canada, Dr. Tam called on her fellow citizens to be vigilant and adhere to social distancing and hygiene measures.

"As long as there is no vaccine, cohabitation with Covid-19 "It will not be without risk," he added.

According to the latest available data, Canada is currently recording 113.800 cases of new coronavirus infection and 8.900 deaths.
