What does the British newspaper Guardian report?

Brexit may be delayed until 2021, according to plans considered by senior EU officials, according to the British newspaper Guardian.

The possibility of a prolonged period of negotiations seems to be gaining ground in the EU if the British Parliament continues to reject the agreement reached by British Prime Minister Theresa May and Brussels, and finally calls for an extension of the negotiations.

Replacing the 21-month post-Brexit transition period with a corresponding negotiating period, while Britain remains an EU member, will allow London and Brussels to come up with new plans for their future relationship with the aim of making the backstop for the Irish border.

According to the APE-MPE, Brussels is determined to avoid proposing a slight extension to the negotiations simply to be forced to reconsider the issue in the summer, when May will again have failed to obtain parliamentary approval, he points out. Guardian.

"If officials consider that there is a reason for the extension, which is not certain given the situation in the UK, (…) they will go far to ensure a decent period to resolve outstanding issues or normalize the situation," he said. a European diplomat, according to the British newspaper.

"A 21-month extension makes sense as it will cover the financial framework (during the EU budget period) and make things easier. If officials are not completely tired of Brexit, (…) I expect a 21-month extension. The issue is being discussed in the corridors of Brussels. "Martin Selmeyer (director of the office of the president of the European Commission), among other things, supports the idea," the diplomat added.
