EU: Prohibition of blue and green tattoos

The two colors used for tattoos are so powerful that they dye the skin for a lifetime. This is exactly why the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) argues that pigments 74160 (Blue No. 15) and 74260 (Green No. 7) should no longer be used for tattoos.

The European Chemicals Agency wants to ban them, because the use of these colors is no longer allowed for cosmetics. After their application, the color stays on the skin for weeks. And because the colors used for tattoos are also considered cosmetics, dyes fall under the jurisdiction of the European body.

Regarding the intention of Brussels to ban blue and green tattoos, the newspaper "Bild" asked the opinion of experts.
For Professor Friedrich Wagner, head of the Department of Laser Medicine at the Hamburg Department of Dermatology, there are no specific tattoo colors that are more harmful to the body.

"For all colors, there are risks from ingredients and toxic products on the skin - for example, when exposed to sunlight or doing a laser while removing the tattoo. Since 2008 there is a list, a regulation of pigments that can not be used in Germany for tattoos. However, the colors used for tattoos in Asia and Eastern Europe often contain toxic substances such as heavy metals. This applies to the black color but also to other colors used for tattoos ", he adds.

He explains that black works differently than colorful tattoos.

"Yes, black particles often react differently to the skin. Small nodules may form. "Pigments are believed to accumulate, causing the immune system cells to overreact."
Regarding the new trend in white ink tattoos, the German professor stressed that even this is not harmless as it can cause infection in the body.

In addition, "the skin may change color, turn brown, yellow or green over time," he points out.
