SARS-CoV-2 infection cases topped 14 million on Friday, according to a Reuters count, marking the first time an increase of 1 million cases in less than 100 hours.

The first case of coronavirus was reported in China in early January and took three months to reach 1 million. It took just four days to reach 14 million of the 13 million recorded on July 13th. The US, with more than 3,6 million confirmed infections, continues to record huge jumps of daily infections in its first wave COVID-19. The country reported a world record of new infections in 24 hours with more than 77.000 on Thursday, while Sweden has recorded a total of 77.281 cases since the start of the pandemic.

The number of cases worldwide is almost three times the number of serious flu cases recorded annually, according to the World Health Organization. The pandemic has so far killed more than 590.000 people in almost seven months, reaching the highest annual reported flu deaths worldwide. The Reuters report, based on government reports, shows that the disease is accelerating faster in America. In Brazil, more than 2 million people have been diagnosed with the virus, including President Zaich Bolsonaro, and more than 76.000 people have died. India, the only other country with more than 1 million cases, is experiencing an average of about 30.000 new infections every day in the last week. The WHO yesterday recorded a record daily increase in coronavirus cases worldwide in 24 hours, amounting to 237.743.

The largest increase was in the United States, Brazil, India and South Africa, according to the Agency's daily update. The previous record was 230.370 cases in one day, on July 12. Deaths are steadily below 5.000 per day.
