The death toll from a wildfire that wreaked havoc in northern California, known as Camp Fire, has risen to more than 1.000, authorities said, adding that the bodies of eight other victims have been found, leaving temporary - death toll in Butte County rises to 71.

The number of missing people, possibly including people who survived the blaze and are unaware that they have been declared missing, rose from 631 on Thursday to 1.011, County Sheriff County Sheriff Corey Honey told a news conference.

"I want you to understand that this is an evolving list," said Sheriff Honey. "The information it gives you is raw data and there is a (…) possibility that the directory contains duplicate entries," he explained.

The giant forest fire, which is far from being brought under control - was 45% controlled on Friday by the State Fire Department - has charred nearly 10.000 homes and other buildings and 550.000 acres of land.

In southern California, the so-called Woolsey Fire has burned more than 400.000 acres, including part of the famed Malibu resort, and has claimed the lives of three people. The count of fires across the State has, as a result, reached at least 74 since last Thursday.
