Next to the "female" and the "male" there will be the "other"

Germany today legalized a third gender in birth certificates, making the country a forerunner in Europe in terms of identifying intersex people.

Next to "female" and "male", the option "other" for the interested persons can be mentioned, according to the bill adopted by the parliament. The coalition government between Angela Merkel's Conservatives and the Social Democrats is thus implementing a 2017 ruling by the Constitutional Court.

The German Supreme Court had given MPs until "the end of 2018" to vote on the legalization of a "third sex". Until now in Germany it has been possible, since May 2013, to leave a gap in the field of gender. Those interested could then, during their lifetime, either choose male or female or keep the gender reference blank.

Other countries in Europe are also committed to recognizing a third gender, such as the Netherlands or Austria. According to UN statistics, between 0,05% and 1,7% of the world's population are intersex people.
