A strong earthquake measuring 6,1 on the Richter scale shook Tokyo and the surrounding area on Thursday night, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said, estimating that there is no risk of a tsunami.

The epicenter was reported at 22.41 GMT (15.41 GMT) at a depth of 80 km in Simba Prefecture, east of the capital.

The Japanese public network NHK reported that an earthquake of magnitude 5+ was recorded on the Japanese scale of earthquake intensity, a level that can cause damage to buildings and power outages. Several high-speed services were suspended due to the earthquake, NHK reported.
