The bodies of fifteen men with multiple bullet wounds were found in an abandoned truck on the side of a road in the state of Michoacan, in western Mexico, the prosecutor's office announced.

The bodies were dumped on a road connecting the cities of Achilles and Lasaro Cardenas, off the coast of Mexico in the Pacific. At least one of the victims is believed to have been a member of a drug-trafficking gang, the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Authorities believe the XNUMX killings were a showdown between drug cartels, which clash over control of marijuana, opium and synthetic hallucinogen production and trafficking in the area.

In Mexico, which continues to be plagued by the wave of violent crime attributed to organized crime, a total of 2017 homicides were recorded in 25.339, an unprecedented number, according to government figures.
