WhatsApp and Meta want to explore the world of producing original content, even if it is branded as in this case.
WhatsApp released the official trailer of “Naija Odyssey” starring NBA champion and National Team star Giannis Antetokounmpo and it is essentially a short film that focuses on his life.
This is the synopsis of the movie:
The true story of a basketball star, Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was born in Greece to Nigerian parents. All his life people tried to tell him who he was. Now Giannis tells his own "origin story of many lineages", as he reconciles his roots, place of birth and sense of belonging among intercultural worlds.
After all, last February, Meta signed a deal with the superstar of the Milwaukee Bucks to become the first ambassador and "face" of WhatsApp. In the trailer you will see below, you can hear the voice of Yiannis saying: "In Greece, my teachers told me about travelers who were fighting with the waters to find their home, themselves. And I was on the same journey."
Naija Odyssey is directed by Nono Ayuso and Rodrigo Inada, edited by Mikkel EG Nielsen, Oscar-winning editor for “Sound of Metal”. Of course, a long time ago Disney wanted to make a movie about the life of Giannis and the Antetokounmpo family. The reason for "RISE" (The Rise) which is released on Disney Plus.
The short film will be released on September 21 through YouTube, WhatsApp social networks and Amazon Prime Video.
