Saad Hariri and his family are expected to travel to France "within the next few days", a source in the French presidency said, shortly after it became known that President Emanuel Macron had invited the outgoing Lebanese prime minister to the country.

It is noted that on Wednesday the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis had a telephone conversation with his "friend" as he called him Hariri, on his own initiative, to invite him to Cyprus.

Hariri resigned as prime minister 11 days ago while in Saudi Arabia.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun has refused to accept the resignation, saying the prime minister is being held by Saudi authorities.

"After speaking with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia and Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, the President (Macron) invited Saad Hariri and his family to France," the French presidency said in a statement.
