italy police 2 France, ARREST

The man who, armed with a knife, was holding two women hostage in a shop in Paris yesterday, Monday afternoon, was arrested today, French Interior Minister Geral Darmanen announced today.

"The perpetrator of the hostage-taking has been arrested. There are no injuries. "I thank the members of the police," Darmanen said on Twitter.

Authorities had quickly ruled out a terrorism case, as the 56-year-old perpetrator was known for his psychiatric history.

Yesterday, the man had released one of the women and negotiations were continuing for the release of the second hostage.

At around 15:20 local time, the perpetrator broke into a store in the Bastille district, where he held two women hostage.

From the beginning of the incident, the police had blocked access to the area.

The perpetrator has been investigated by the police department of the 12th arrondissement, the Paris prosecutor's office said.
