The plane, an AN-26, was flying from the regional capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the town of Palana in the northern part of the peninsula when it stopped transmitting identification signals.

There are six crew members and 22 passengers on board.

According to the TASS agency, the aircraft was built in 1982.
