Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu had a telephone conversation with his Israeli counterpart Jair Lapid, the Turkish news agency Anadolu reported, citing Turkish Foreign Ministry sources.
Anadolu also reports that the Israeli press also paid close attention to the telephone conversation. According to the same sources, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz also reports that Lapid received the phone call from Tsavousoglu for the first time in years. The newspaper comments that this conversation was another sign of the breaking of the ice between the two countries. The Turkish Foreign Minister asked about the health of Lapid, who became ill with coronavirus about 10 days ago and his quarantine ended earlier this week. The last telephone conversation between the Foreign Ministers of the two countries was in 2008.
It should be noted that after the incident with Mavi Marmara in 2010, the two countries withdrew their ambassadors. In 2016, measures were taken to normalize relations and mutual ambassadors were appointed.
However, in 2018, Turkey recalled its ambassador for consultations and called on Israel to take a similar step, after Israel opened fire on Palestinians protesting the opening of a US embassy in Jerusalem, killing 60 people.
Since then, the ambassadors have never returned to Tel Aviv and Ankara, and high-ranking officials from both countries have been 'de facto' authorized since then.
