The German government does not want to impose a new lockdown despite the fact that the number of its cases covid-19 is growing rapidly due to the variant strain Omicron of the coronavirus, said Finance Minister Christian Lindner.
"We want to avoid generalized closures of entire areas in the future," Lindner told the Stuttgarder Nachrichten and Neue Berliner Redaktionsgesellschaft.
"Our goal remains to maintain social life as much as possible and to avoid harm to society as much as possible," he explained.
Lindner has called on Germany to be able to vaccinate its entire population within a month in the event of new pandemic waves.
Germany has a relatively low vaccination rate compared to other Western European countries: 71,3% of its population is fully immunized against covid-19 and 39,3% have received a booster dose.
Today, the Robert Koch Institute in Germany announced 58.912 new cases covid-19 for the previous 24 hours, an increase of 47% compared to the previous week. During the same period, 346 new deaths were recorded, bringing the total number of pandemic victims to 112.925.
