Four of the XNUMX newborns in a state-run neonatal intensive care unit in central India died when a fire broke out on Monday night, officials said.

Series of fires

The tragedy added to a series of fires in hospitals across the country this year, especially in intensive care units (ICUs), which have claimed the lives of dozens of people.

The rest of the newborns at Kamla Nehru Hospital in Madhya Pradesh, many of them underweight, were taken to other wards, Viswa Medical Education Minister Kailas Sarang told reporters after the fire was brought under control.

"Other children are being cared for," Sarang later tweeted, adding that an investigation had been ordered into the fire.

Indian hospital fires have killed at least 70 people this year, including 10 last weekend in Maharashtra, a state adjacent to Madhya Pradesh.
