Two people were injured in the wreckage that fell on Meerssen from a plane that was engulfed in flames in the air.

The Boeing 747 had just left Maastricht, but one of its 4 engines caught fire shortly after taking off from the Dutch city.

An elderly woman was injured in the head by engine debris and a child suffered burns to his hands when he grabbed a piece of hot metal. Some houses in the area were also damaged.

Dutch authorities say the Boeing 747 belongs to Bermuda-based Longtail Aviation. It was destined for New York, but it caught fire immediately after takeoff.

Meerssen is next to Maastricht Airport. The plane finally landed at Liege airport. The Dutch authorities are still investigating the causes of the accident.

The accident comes a day after a Boeing 777 saw its engine engulfed in flames in the air and debris filling Denver.
