Britain: Uber's license suspended in Sheffield suspended

The northern English city of Sheffield lifted the suspension of Uber's license after the company provided satisfactory answers to questions, in a move that boosts the company's operations in the country.

Earlier this month, local officials in Sheffield said Uber's license had been suspended because it did not respond to inquiries. Uber said it never received the mail, which the local council spoke of, as it was sent to the wrong address.

Sheffield officials said they were now having "productive discussions" with Uber and were considering a new licensing application from the company.

"The new application, submitted by Uber in October, for the leasing of private vehicles in Sheffield is being considered and the decision will be made in early 2018," the council said in a statement.

An Uber spokesman welcomed the move: "We look forward to continuing to serve tens of thousands of customers and drivers in Sheffield," he said.

On Tuesday, the city of York refused to renew Uber's license, citing a breach of data and the number of complaints it has received, in a blow to the company as it tries to continue operating in London.

Next week, Cambridge is expected to decide whether to renew the company's license. In early 2018, Uber licenses also expire in Britain's second largest city, Birmingham, and in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh.
