Buckingham Palace today unveiled a new portrait of Prince Philip, painted by Australian-born artist Ralph Haymans, the year Queen Elizabeth II's husband announced his retirement from active public life.

The portrait, showing the 96-year-old prince standing in the main corridor of Windsor Tower, was made for display at the Museum of National History in Frederiksburg Tower, Denmark.

The museum is holding a retrospective exhibition of Haymans works in 2018, part of which aims to explore the historical and cultural ties between the royal families of Britain and Denmark, Buckingham said in a statement.

The Duke of Edinburgh, who from his birth bore the title of Duke of Denmark, as well as his ancestors come from the royal houses of Britain and Denmark.

Prince Philip, who married Elizabeth II in 1947, retired from public life in August, ending decades of royal duties that were occasionally marked by verbal missteps and blunders for which he was described as graphic.
