Turkish forces and Syrian rebel allies invaded the Kurdish city of Afrin in northwestern Syria, which was the target of an operation launched by Ankara in January to oust Kurdish militia fighters from the YPG (People's Defense Units). Turkey considers it terrorist, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced today.

Photos of Turkish soldiers holding the Turkish flag in the streets of Afrin were posted on social media, such as twitter.

"Turkish forces and their Syrian allies have taken control of many neighborhoods and fighting continues in Afrin," said Rami Abdelrahman, director of the Observatory.

At the same time, the Russian news agency RIA reported that more than 5.000 people have so far left the rebel-held East Guta, where Damascus has launched a large operation a month ago to bring it back under its control.
