With the aim of further improving the health services provided to all citizens without exception, the Organization of Public Health Services (OKYPY) continues to invest in infrastructure.

In this context, on Monday, December 20, 2021, the agreement was signed to start the renovation of the building where the former Latsia Health Center was housed and its conversion into a protected hostel, with a capacity of 11 beds.

  • The hostel will have a capacity of 11 beds and will contribute to the decongestion of Athalassa Hospital.
  • It will accommodate patients with chronic mental health problems in a stable condition, who do not pose a risk.

These are people with chronic mental health problems who need deinstitutionalization and integration into the community in sheltered or semi-sheltered hostels. These people have been assessed that they no longer need compulsory hospitalization at Athalassa Hospital, but unfortunately there is no family or community system to take care of them.

The hostel will meet all the requirements required for the operation of such facilities and will be staffed with specialized mental health staff with 24-hour coverage 7 days a week. There will also be psychiatric coverage and involvement of other mental health workers where needed.

Around the area under development, dense tree planting will be created, while a general upgrade and improvement of the aspects of the building and the surrounding area will be promoted.

The cost of remodeling the space amounts to 167.000 euros + VAT.

In a statement, the Director of Mental Health Services of OKYPY, Anna Paradisiotou, stated: "Our effort through this project is on the one hand the deinstitutionalization and the provision of a more humane environment to people with mental health problems that can be restored in the community and on the other hand the decongestion of the Athalassa Hospital".

The promotion of this project is done with the support of the Municipality of Latsia and in collaboration with the Department of Urban Planning and Housing and is part of a series of actions of OKYPY for the continuous improvement of infrastructure and mental health services provided to those who need it.
