Dr. Abdominal: The possibility of generalized lockdown was raised, preferably local

"Local bans in the provinces of Nicosia and Famagusta do not seem to have worked"

Coronavirus, Dr. Κολιού

At noon and something, Dr. Maria Kolliou, a member of the epidemiological team of the Ministry of Health, was hosted. Dr. Koliou who spoke about the measures discussed and will be announced tomorrow by the Minister of Health. On the table, as he said, was the possibility of a universal lockdown.

He initially said that the final conclusions and decisions will be based on last minute results. "I can not say that I know the measures that will be announced tomorrow."

He added that Paphos has the largest reduction in new incidents, thus making it in a better position than any other province.

He added that Limassol has stabilized and is in better condition than it was before the lockdown but continues to be in the worst position of all the Provinces.

For the provinces of Famagusta, Larnaca and Nicosia, he stated that they have an increase in their cases with the province of Famagusta being in a worse situation than the others.

"We do not rely only on the number of cases because it also depends on the samples that exist." He added that compared to the number of tests performed, there seems to be a decrease in positive cases.

He pointed out that an important factor is the number of hospital admissions and especially in the intensive care unit as it shows the weight and stress that the health system accepts. "There are 15 patients in the intensive care unit, while the limit we had set was 14 patients." He explained that there should be no complacency regardless of the fact that Christmas is coming ".

Then Dr. Koliou stressed that there were suggestions for a universal lockdown for two weeks. This does not seem to be applicable as he said because he can not easily relax the lockdown when the 15 days have passed. "I think only local lockdowns work, although in Limassol we did not have the results we would have liked." He clarified that the local bans in the provinces of Nicosia and Famagusta did not seem to work.

He explained that when the lockdown in Limassol and Paphos was decided, the situation in Nicosia was much better. "It is difficult to impose a general lockdown in the run-up to Christmas and we believe that tighter measures can be imposed."

Regarding schools, Dr. Koliou said that the closure of some steps was discussed and there are some possibilities. "They could close schools faster in the run-up to the Christmas holidays and continue their lessons online."

Finally, he stated that after tomorrow's meeting of the epidemiological team with the President of the Republic, the final decisions will be made.
