Less than a week remains before the expiration of the restrictive measures, with the government being called upon to take within the days those decisions that will "accompany" the lives of the citizens until the crucial Christmas holidays. The experts who are meeting today are invited to present their own suggestions to the President of the Republic tomorrow, with the scenarios for the next day giving and receiving.
"Mera Mesimeri" hosted Professor of Molecular Virology Leontios Kostrikis who gave the stigma of his own thoughts based on the epidemiological data as they are at the moment, while the "ghost" of a new lockdown is still hovering in the public sphere.
Asked about this, Mr. Kostrikis noted that in any case such a definition has the character of a "peculiar" lockdown from that of the first wave. "Horizontal lockdown from what I understand does not seem to be in the general philosophy of many, even the government," the professor replied specifically.
According to him, the absolute priority in terms of targeting the new measures should be that of the hospitals that are starting to fill threatening lately, openly testing the local health system. Special care for the elderly who should be given priority in relation to the new restrictive measures.
At the same time, he added to the whole equation that the guarantee of the most normal life of the citizens during the Christmas period should be taken into account.
Based on the epidemiological data as they are, Mr. Kostrikis stated that his own assessment wants Paphos, Nicosia and Larnaca to be in the same epidemiological point, so "everyone should be in lockdown or no one should be in lockdown" he noted characteristically . At the same time, there is an increase in cases in Nicosia. The professor also finds an increase in the area of free Famagusta.
Regarding the big question mark, which is none other than the case of Limassol, Mr. Kostrikis stated that "unfortunately the numbers are high, they are in deep red in my opinion".
He also clarified that the role of scientists is to make suggestions only, with the final decisions being borne entirely by the political leadership which is in charge of taking them. "The state is not obliged to listen to these suggestions, it can differentiate them in the way it wants." He said, however, that usually the decisions of the State are based on their own suggestions.
"We are going through a period that, in my humble opinion, is the beginning of the end of the pandemic, with the advent of vaccines. "After the holidays, we will count down until we have the vaccines," said Mr. Kostrikis.
