6 minor mothers in 2019 were referred to the Social Welfare Services

It may sound unbelievable, but in the years 2020 in Cyprus there are underage mothers and in fact there are many.

In total, 14 underage mothers, only for 2020 cooperate Welfare Office of which two (17 17 and XNUMX years old respectively) are under the legal care of the Director of Social Welfare Services.

According to the data submitted to the Parliament by the Minister of Labor Zeta Aimilianidou, in 2019, the Social Welfare Services cooperated with 6 minor mothers.

It is noted, however, that according to the Marriage Law of 2013-2019, a minor over the age of 16 is allowed to marry with the consent of his parent / guardian and there may be cases which are not notified to the Social Welfare Services.

Regarding the number of reports of underage mothers of victims of violence, this is very small. According to Ms. Minister in such cases, however, arrangements are made for the minor mother to be hosted by the parents or other relatives, as long as they are not involved in the use of violence.

If there is a need for accommodation in a shelter, the Social Welfare Services in collaboration with the Association for the Prevention and Response to Domestic Violence, may decide to admit her to the shelter exceptionally.
