The problem of staff shortages is becoming more and more acute in Cyprus. There are around 11.500 job vacancies. The largest number of positions are offered in retail, clothing and footwear stores, technology stores, department stores and supermarkets.

The hotel professions and customer service positions are in particular demand, while there are increased needs in the areas of business administration, finance and secretarial.

The situation has sounded the alarm in the market, as there is a belief that the gaps in the staffing of companies are huge and cast doubt on the proper functioning of all companies and consequently the economy.

The Christmas season is already causing headaches for employers on how shifts will be covered due to the increased workload. OEB and KEVE have addressed, through a letter to the President of the Republic, putting before him the problem and suggestions for dealing with it.

The issue is expected to be discussed at a meeting with the Minister of Labor in early November.
