The body of Famagusta Mayor Alexis Galanos, who passed away on Monday, July 15, arrived in Cyprus from Greece at noon, while he was with his family for a short vacation in Kos.
As Famagusta Mayor Chrysanthos Zannettos stated in KYPE, "the body of Alexis Galanos is expected to arrive at Larnaca airport at noon from Greece and will be picked up by a Funeral Home to be transported to Nicosia."
He added that "the legal necropsy that was performed yesterday at the Hospital of Kos showed that the death of Alexis Galanos is due to an acute myocardial infarction".
He also stated that “the procession, to which will be added the Metropolitan of Constantia and Famagusta Vassilios, will take place on Monday, July 22, 2019 at five in the afternoon at the Holy Temple of God Wisdom in Strovolos. The family will receive condolences in the church from 15:30 until 17:00 ".
Mr. Zannettos also said that in an extraordinary session of the Plenary Session of the Municipal Council of Famagusta held yesterday "it was decided to declare 40 days of mourning during which the flags in the buildings of the Municipality of Famagusta in Limassol and the Cultural Center in Deryneia will fly.
It was also decided that “the funeral of Alexis Galanos will be held at the expense of the Municipality of Famagusta and it will be attended by the Municipal Council of Famagusta and the staff of the Municipality. The offices of the Municipality of Famagusta and the Cultural Center will remain closed on the day of the funeral, while Books of Condolence will be opened for government officials and the public at the offices of the Municipality of Famagusta in Limassol, the Cultural Center of the Municipality in Deryneia and the Union Offices in Nicosia".
According to the Mayor of Famagusta, "the Democratic Council will study in the near future further ways to honor Alexis Galanos."
