Two skiers were killed by an avalanche in western Austria, police announced today, on an unusually dangerous day in the Alps, as a warmer day was followed by a heavy snowfall.
Rescuers located the bodies of two Austrian skiers, a 61-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man, at 00:40 today after midnight, after their relatives mobilized the authorities, when they could no longer contact them.
In another incident earlier yesterday, a 42-year-old Austrian skier and mountain driver and four Swedish skiers, all men in their 40s, were killed by an avalanche that completely buried them near the town of Spice, on the border with Switzerland.
Another member of the group, a 43-year-old Swede, managed to call for help and was rescued, according to police.
