A package of measures to promote bicycle use, including a subsidy for the purchase of a bicycle with a budget of € 500.000, will be forwarded to the Council of Ministers by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works.

According to an announcement of the GTP, the package of measures, which includes 15 actions, was discussed at a meeting at the Ministry of Transport, chaired by the competent Minister Giannis Karousos in the presence of Environment Commissioner Clelias Vassilios.

"The Ministry of Transport has set the bar very high on the issue of using the bicycle as a means of transportation. We have selected 15 actions, several of which can be implemented immediately ", said Mr. Karousos in his statements, after the end of the meeting.

He pointed out that "the Bicycle Use Promotion Council will meet at least 3 times a year in order to monitor the implementation of the various decisions and the implementation of the strategy."

Asked about the subsidy rate, the Minister said that "it has not been decided yet but the Ministry of Transport has included in the budget of 2021 € 500.000 in order to be used both for the subsidy for the purchase of new bicycles and for the repair of old bicycles."

In her own statements, Ms. Vassiliou stated that "bicycle shopkeepers state that almost all bicycles have been purchased and for this reason ways must be found to utilize all existing infrastructure and create new infrastructure".

He wished good luck in this very worthwhile endeavor that definitely helps the environment ".

According to the announcement, an effort of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works is the integration of the bicycle in the daily life of the citizen as a safe, healthy and reliable means of transportation and sports, an effort that is part of the wider commitment of EU member states to carbon dioxide emissions, as stated in the National Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2030, which provides for climate neutrality by 2050.

Therefore, it is noted that a key area for the transition to a clean, resource-efficient and carbon-neutral future is mobility with the adoption of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SBAK). Managing urban mobility is a key aspect of improving the organization of transport in cities and regions and contributes significantly to improving sustainable mobility and carbon-free transport.
