Parliament Speaker Annita Dimitriou submitted a proposal for a law providing for life imprisonment.

According to the reasoning of the decision, the purpose of the bill is to amend the Penal Code, in order to introduce the crime of murder which will result in life imprisonment.

As is well known, homicide, that is, the murder of women or girls under the age of 18, in most cases goes unpunished, reinforcing the perception that violence against women is an acceptable and / or inevitable phenomenon.

In this context, violence against women is widely accepted as a form of discrimination that violates the constitutionally enshrined principle of equality, concludes the President's reasoning.
