Cyprus is freezing today - Total frost in the mountains

Low temperatures and frost prevail in Cyprus, as the area is affected by weak high pressure and north wind. Total frost prevails in the higher mountains, while early in the morning frost was expected to be observed locally and in the lower mountains and the forecast states that the temperatures are very low. Although all roads leading to Troodos are open, however only for vehicles with four-wheel drive or equipped with anti-skid chains. The height of the snow reached 1 meter and 10 centimeters on Olympus and 1 meter in Troodos Square.

According to a statement from the Police on the road network of urban areas and on the highways, there is no serious problem this morning.

In the mountains, however, there was snow and frost and special attention is recommended to those who travel on the road network.

According to the Department of Meteorology, high pressure and northerly winds affect the area. The weather today will initially be partly cloudy with the possibility of isolated rain, mainly in the south and east and, light snow locally in the mountains, early in the morning.

But soon it is expected to become mostly clear.

The temperature will rise to around 12 degrees inland, around 13 on the coast and around zero in the higher mountains. In the higher mountains, total frost is expected, while early in the morning frost is expected to be observed locally and in the lower mountains.

The temperature is expected to fluctuate around 6 degrees inland tonight, around 8 on the coast and around minus 4 degrees in the higher mountains. Frost is expected in the mountains and locally in the semi-mountains.

The following roads are only open to all-wheel drive vehicles or equipped with anti-skid chains:

- Road of Paleochori - Agros - Alonas
- Palaichoriou Road - Aska - Fterikoudi - Alonas
- Alona - Platanistasa Road
- Alonas - Polystypos Road
- Polystypos - Lagouderon Road
- Road Lagouderon - Chandria

All roads leading to Troodos are also open only to all-wheel drive vehicles or equipped with anti-skid chains.

Drivers of vehicles traveling in the mountains are urged to be extremely careful, to drive at low, safe speeds, to maintain a safe distance from oncoming vehicles and to give priority to other passing vehicles where necessary.
