How to deal with today's heat

Due to the high temperatures that are expected to be recorded today, May 29, 2019, between the hours of 12 pm and 4 pm, mainly inside, the Medical Services and Public Health Services of the Ministry of Health remind the public of the following basic measures for prevention of side effects in the human body:

  • Avoid frequent exposure to the sun, as well as unnecessary movement and heavy physical exercise. It is right to prefer shady and cool places and to avoid crowded places.
  • Lightweight clothing with loose light-colored clothing and the use of a hat and sunglasses if sun exposure is required.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages, coffee and heavy foods such as fats, chocolates and spices. Preference for light foods, vegetables and juices.
  • Get enough water.
  • Use of fans or air conditioning systems to create air flow especially during the hottest hours of the day. During the night it is good to keep the windows open.
  • Lots and loose showers during the day.
  • Particular attention should be paid to vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly and pregnant women. If there is a newborn in the house, it is recommended to be lightly dressed. Ask your pediatrician for instructions on taking fluids.
  • People with chronic illnesses, such as respiratory or cardiovascular, are advised to consult their doctor about any specific measures they need to take.
  • Groups that are particularly sensitive to high temperatures and the sun are young children, the elderly, the obese, people who are not accustomed to working in an environment where there is a lot of heat and humidity, heart patients, diabetics, people with respiratory problems, renal insufficiency, people receiving medication such as diuretics, etc.
