The research team of the Laboratory of Chemical Engineering and Sustainability Engineering of the Open University of Cyprus headed by Dr. Antonis Zorpas organized a workshop / conference within the project "BalkanROAD". The workshop was held on April 4, 2019 at the Central Administration Building of the Open University of Cyprus and was addressed to agricultural companies, scientists, students, local authorities and policy makers.
During the workshop, the objectives, the expected results and the results of the project to date were presented. For the needs of the laboratory, the specialist scientist Dr. Christina Chroni spoke about sustainable management in agricultural enterprises and specifically referred to "Integrated Agricultural Waste Management in the Context of the Circular Economy".
Dr. Christina Chroni is a Research Fellow at Harokopio University, holds a degree in Agricultural Biotechnology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Management and Technology. Her research interests focus on waste prevention and sustainable resource management. At the end of the workshop, participants had the opportunity to raise issues related to agricultural enterprises in Cyprus and elsewhere and to propose solutions to environmental problems related to the agricultural sector.
Mostly students, scientists, environmental organizations and agricultural companies participated. The workshop was also broadcast live on the platform of the Open University of Cyprus, giving the opportunity to more students to attend.
Some of the issues discussed were: food waste discarded during agricultural production, storage or processing, the use of unnecessary fertilizers, fertilizer packaging and non-recyclable plastic materials, energy consumption in the processing of agricultural products.
