A letter to the Minister of the Interior, Konstantinos Ioannou, in which he requests the urgent undertaking of an initiative to draw up a Strategic Plan, in relation to the reconstruction of the 43 apartment buildings in refugee settlements which present problems of static adequacy, was sent on Monday by the General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou ,
In his letter to the HYPES, Mr. Stefanou requests that the competent Committees of the Parliament be informed about the findings of the study by the Department of Urban Planning and Housing, which he did in 2020 and which concerned 358 apartment buildings.
In particular, it states that "in discussions held at the Parliamentary Committee on Refugees, the Department of Urban Planning and Housing mentioned that in a study carried out in 2020, 43 apartment buildings were identified in refugee settlements with very low compressive strength indices, well below the limits set by ETEK".
"The situation", he notes in his letter, "is extremely serious, especially if we take into account that recently there have been strong earthquakes in Turkey and Syria which are in our region, and that many experts warn that at any time such earthquakes may happen again ».
According to the General Secretary of AKEL, "an urgent initiative must be taken by the Ministry of the Interior, in order to prepare a Strategic Plan for the reconstruction of these apartment buildings as soon as possible.
In addition, he calls on the Ministry of Internal Affairs, with his own intervention, to inform the competent Committees of the Parliament about the findings of the study carried out by the Department of Urban Planning and Housing in 2020, which concerned 358 apartment buildings.
