The Republic of Cyprus has no connection or involvement with Britain's military operations against the Houthis, Government Spokesman Constantinos Letymiotis reiterated today, noting, at the same time, that the effects on the country's economy and internationally from the Houthi attacks are evident .

During today's briefing by the Government Representative to the media, at the Presidential Palace, and when asked about the effects on the Cypriot economy from the situation in relation to the Houthi attacks, he said that "the effects on the economy - not only in Cyprus - through the prevailing insecurity due to Houthi attacks are evident".

As he mentioned, at the EU level, on January 22, the matter will be discussed, with the participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and there the issue of both security and economic effects will be raised.

Asked if the Republic of Cyprus knew about the British strikes against the Houthis before they took place, Mr. Letymiotis said that the Republic of Cyprus is in constant communication with the United Kingdom within the framework established by the Treaty of Establishment in relation to the use of British Bases.

"What we must emphasize once again is that the Republic of Cyprus has no connection or involvement with military operations," he said and added that "the communication that the Minister of Foreign Affairs had with his British counterpart is also relevant ».

Humanitarian aid in Gaza

Asked where the matter stands with the creation of a maritime corridor for the provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza, Mr. Letympiotis said that he is still in the diplomatic contacts that the Government has with the states that expressed the desire to help. "You realize, however," he noted, "that this further development and completion of the initiative also depends on external factors."

Arrest of T/k in Italy

In relation to the matter of the Turkish Cypriot arrested in Italy and asked what is the latest information the Government has, Mr. Letympiotis said that today the Turkish Cypriot will appear before the court in Rome, where he will either accept his extradition to Republic of Cyprus to proceed with the judicial proceedings or proceed with the judicial proceedings in Rome, if it disputes the issuance of the warrant. "We are waiting until the end of the day, we are in contact with the competent Italian authorities for further information," he said.

Asked to answer whether the Government is considering the issue concerning the activity of Greek Cypriot businessmen and lawyers also in the occupied territories, the Spokesperson said that a range of legal measures that can be applied in relation, in particular, to the usurpation of Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied territories, is something which the Government is considering.

"The meetings that have taken place between the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Legal Service are relevant, this evaluation of the measures that can be taken is at a very advanced stage and in the next period some of these measures will start to be activated", he added.
