According to a parliamentary statement, after his contacts in Beijing and Shanghai, Mr. Sillouris had a meeting with the President of the People's Congress of Guangdong Province, Li Yumei, accompanied, as in all his meetings outside Beijing, by the Vice President of the Chinese Institute of Foreign Affairs, Liang Jianquan. Ms. Li welcomed the Speaker of Parliament, stressing that in the context of long-term relations between Cyprus and China, the province of Guangdong and its capital, Guangzhou, have developed particularly strong trade ties with Cyprus.

He then briefed Mr. Syllouris on the current economic situation in the region, presenting the development plan of the local authorities, based on the guidelines of the recently completed 19th Congress of the Communist Party of China.

Ms. Li referred in particular to the large tourist flow in Guangdong Province, both inside and outside China, noting that Cyprus could be a very good destination for the people of her province.

Agreeing, Mr. Syllouris praised the advantages of Cyprus, not only as a tourist destination and investment center, but also as a potential bridge for China's multifaceted economic cooperation with countries in Europe and the Middle East, and underlined in particular the prospects for cooperation in research, technology and education, as well as in cultural matters.

On the occasion of his presence in the city, the Speaker of Parliament visited the Development Zone of Guangzhou, where he was guided to exhibition spaces and technological innovation units, with emphasis on its applications in the fields of biotechnology, culture and arts.

The Speaker of Parliament leaves China late at night and arrives in Cyprus tomorrow morning at 10:20.
