Cyprus and Bulgaria can make a catalytic contribution to addressing the specific challenges that characterize the wider region, due to their proximity, their own experiences and better understanding of their problems. This was expressed today in a meeting between the Speaker of the Parliament Dimitris Syllouris and the President of Bulgaria Rumen Radev, who is paying an official visit to Cyprus.

Welcoming the Bulgarian President in Cyprus, Mr. Syllouris praised the high level of bilateral relations between Cyprus and Bulgaria, stressing that there is room for further upgrading of parliamentary relations between the two countries and for better coordination. their positions in the context of their joint participation within the European Union (EU). He also stressed the need to expand bilateral co-operation in other areas of mutual interest.
Furthermore, Mr. Syllouris thanked Mr. Radev for the solidarity, support and assistance that his country provided to the Cypriot people after the Turkish invasion of 1974, as well as for providing scholarships to Cypriot students to study in Bulgaria.
For his part, Mr. Radev expressed his appreciation to the House of Representatives as he was one of the first Parliaments of EU member states to ratify the Treaty of Accession of Bulgaria to the Union and to pass legislation that does not restrict the movement of Bulgarian workers. in Cyprus after accession.
In addition, Mr. Radev referred to the impending assumption of the presidency of the EU Council by his country in the first half of 2018 and addressed an invitation to the Speaker of Parliament on behalf of the Bulgarian National Assembly, for participation of the House of Representatives in Conferences to be held. organized in this context. The Speaker of the Parliament briefed the Bulgarian President on the tripartite cooperation in which the House of Representatives participates, contributing precisely to the creation of a positive climate and the consolidation of mutual understanding and peace in the Middle East.
