The report states that German tourists have decreased by 40% and Irish by 50%. "Tourism is the soul of the Greek economy, it accounts for 20% of the productive economy and it is estimated that one in five Greeks work in industry," the report said, adding that this blow to tourism is a result of economic times in Greece and Europe.
"Zakynthos is an island with contradictions. On the one hand the small fishing villages and traditional settlements that give the taste of an old Greece. But a few minutes from there is the paradise of Laganas, full of nightclubs and restaurants and a crowd of young people, mostly British. "But there is one thing in common between these two sides, the sudden dramatic drop in tourism on this picturesque island," the BBC reported.
Christina Tetradi, president of the Laganas hoteliers' association, speaking on the British site, said that foreign tourists who called her, to make a reservation, asked her if there was enough food in the country and if due to currency they could leave the island! "This is a terrible distortion of the situation by the media and it must stop," Ms Tetradi told a British journalist.
