Proper storage of fruits and vegetables ensures a longer shelf life for the products and of course saves you from wasting money.
That is why it is very important to store them properly and to distinguish what does not fit! Some fruits and vegetables as they ripen produce an organic compound called ethylene. Ethylene, however, promotes the decomposition of other, sensitive products stored in the same bowl or refrigerator drawer.
Which fruits and vegetables do not fit:
- Onions & potatoes: Onions produce ethylene in small quantities. The taste of the potato can "absorb" the aroma and smell of the onion if the two products are stored together.
- Banana & any other fruit / vegetable: Banana should be isolated from all other fresh products, as it promotes their rapid ripening and decomposition.
