Letters from the Famagusta Association of United Kingdom to Members of Parliament and MEPs

Cypriot epistoles

The recently elected Commission of the Association of Famagusta UK has implemented the action plan with letters to British MPs and MEPs, which refer to the need for MEPs to support the return of refugees to their homes and to implement Council resolutions Security that refer to the return of Famagusta to its legal residents.

The Famagusta Association calls on the British government to become the catalyst for a new international pressure on Turkey to restore the human rights of Cypriot refugees, reminding the United Kingdom of its obligations as a guarantor.

At the same time, the British government is called upon to take an international initiative to stop Turkey's threats and interventions in the Cypriot EEZ. The letter notified to the members of the European Parliament has a similar content.

The Association also appealed to the British Inter-Parliamentary Committee on Cyprus to condemn Turkey's aggressive behavior in the Cypriot EEZ and the threatening statements made by Turkish officials.

"The Cypriot government has every right under international law, as a sovereign country, to explore gas fields in its exclusive economic zones. […] While the world remains silent on Turkey's unacceptable conduct, this is an opportunity for the British Parliamentary Committee on Cyprus (APPG for Cyprus) to reaffirm its commitment to international law and peace, condemning the conduct "and calling on Ankara to respect the independence and sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus," the letter said.

It is noted that the members of the Inter-Party Committee for Cyprus have taken a clear stance in favor of the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus.

In another letter addressed to the mayor and the municipal councilors of Famagusta, as well as Cypriot MPs, the Association requests the continuation of the effort for the return of Famagusta to its legal residents, but also for the return of all refugees to their homes and properties.

"We want to have your assurance that when the talks on the Cyprus issue resume, you will urgently ask and demand from our negotiating team to discuss the safeguarding and resettlement of the entire refugee population of Famagusta to its homes before finding a comprehensive solution. . "Something that was not given importance", the letter states, among other things.

It is noted that the Famagusta Association of the UK had collected 50.000 signatures in Britain in favor of the immediate return of Famagusta to its legal inhabitants and had succeeded in passing a similar resolution by the British Parliament with the support of friends MPs.
