According to the announcement, the cabinet yesterday, instead of reviewing its previous decisions on golf courses, after the pile of environmental violations in recent years, as reported, approved a timetable for securing the required permits and implementing development for all stadium developments. golf.

The announcement recalls that the government had committed to building a golf course within the Natura 2000 area of ​​Cape Greco and approved the lease of 59 hectares of land in the Ayia Napa forest.

AKEL expresses through its announcement its strong dissatisfaction but also its disagreement in relation to this decision, stating that areas that are part of the NATURE 2000 network are protected areas, due to their special biodiversity, and the network is the legal European protection. , to protect such areas.

According to AKEL, with these actions the government is violating the European acquis and must be ready to face the consequences.

AKEL states that such developments can also not be discussed in the midst of water scarcity. A golf course in Cyprus, according to the announcement, needs about 1 million tons of water per year to be maintained and this in itself is a huge problem, especially when water is cut off by farmers.
