Residents of the Kokkina area of Ayia Napa are taking to the streets, protesting against the continued burning of garbage in an illegal garbage dump within the Municipality of Paralimni. The protest will take place on Monday, October 28 at 12 noon, at the roundabout between Ayia Napa and Paralimni and at the end of the Rizoelia-Ayia Napa highway. Protesters plan to cut off vehicle traffic. Speaking to alphanews.live, the member of the Coordinating Committee of Residents, Spyros Vassilios, stated that the purpose is to announce the problem that has existed for ten years in the area of Kokkines in Ayia Napa.

"The situation is unacceptable, we can not open a window in winter and summer. Many times in the summer we have the windows open and around four in the morning a suffocating smell is created that does not let you sleep. You wake up and have a sore throat. It causes health problems, headaches, vomiting, migraines, respiratory problems, the situation has reached the point of no return. "

According to Mr. Vassilios, the residents plan to send a letter to the Attorney General Costas Clerides, requesting intervention on the issue, which will be accompanied by 150 signatures with the request of the residents for fresh air for them and their children.

"It is unacceptable in a European country that hosts so many tourists and in the Kokkines area many foreigners have bought houses and relocated, to complain that they have left their countries to rest and not be able to sleep because there is this problem."

The member of the Residents Coordinating Committee stated that the Police, Fire Brigade, local authorities and District Administration are aware of the problem, while a relevant discussion was recently held before the Parliamentary Environment Committee, without any measures being taken so far.
