Israel's Ambassador to Cyprus Oren Anolik paid a visit to the Municipality of Deryneia today, who met with the Mayor, members of the Municipal Council, took a tour of the museums and heard stories of the fleeing of Jews from Cyprus to Israel.
In a written statement from the Municipality, it is stated that "during the meeting of the Mayor of Deryneia, Andros Karagiannis, with the Ambassador of Israel, Oren Anolik, the important role of Deryneia in the flight of several Jews from Cyprus to the newly established state of Israel was discussed. The rural Deryneia, with the help and solidarity it provided to the persecuted Jews in Cyprus, contributed to their return to Israel at the end of the 1940s".
It is added that "the Ambassador of Israel was impressed by the stories of descendants of Deryneites who helped with every means at their disposal the tested Jews, whom they hosted in their homes and orchards, until they boarded ships for their final destination."
According to the announcement, "residents of Deryneia, who had the opportunity to meet the well-known "Pertsina", a Jewish farmer and landowner of the area, told the Israeli Ambassador their personal experiences about her hard work and the respect she and her family had for her. of, both for the residents of Deryneia and Famagusta District in general".
The Ambassador of Israel "was guided to the burrows of Deryneia, which the Local Authority is trying to highlight through funds from the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works. Mr. Anolik was also guided to the Museums of the Municipality, where he met with members of the Municipal Council, researchers, writers and residents of Deryneia who helped Jews or worked in the orchards of the late Perciena.
