Thanks to the conquest of the gold medal in the World Cup that is being held these days in the city of Changwon in South Korea, Andreas Makris secured an Olympic card to participate in the Trapp event, in the Olympic Games "Tokyo 2020"!

It is the 2nd Olympic card secured by the Cypriot shooting, after the one before the Women's Skit secured by Andri Eleftheriou a few weeks ago, and the 3rd Cypriot participation in the Olympic Games after the qualification of the sailor Pavlos Kontidis in the Laser category.

Andreas Makris is 28 years old, was born and lives in Paralimni and is an athlete of the Shooting Organization of Famagusta Province.

The biggest success he has achieved so far in his career was winning the 4th place in the World Cup held in Siggiewi, Malta in 2018.

That's how gold came about

Andreas Makris passed to the final of the race after a two-day battle, with the excellent performance of 123/125 successes and thus gained the right to claim in addition to the medal and one of the two Olympic cards given by the race.

Makris lost the second record in the first round and then had 119 consecutive well-aimed attempts, before losing the 22nd in the fifth round (!!!), an appearance that could only lead him to the final in a match involving 110 shooters.

Of the six athletes who took part in the final, Australian James Willet already had an Olympic card from previous games, so the battle was fought among the other five, who in addition to Makris were two Turkish snipers, a British and a Frenchman.

After the first 25 Discs, one by one his opponents were knocked out, and the departure of the two Turks and the Frenchman, secured Makris the Olympic card, while then the Australian also came out.
The big battle was for the gold medal, as there was a tie in the first place with the Englishman Coward Holley. In an awesome shoot-off match in which Makris threw second, the Englishman was the one who had the first misplaced attempt, which Makris took full advantage of with Olympic composure, winning the gold medal at the Changwon World Cup.

After 28 years

Despite the constant presence of the Cypriot shooting at the Olympic Games in the Skit event, Cyprus will send an athlete to the Olympic Games in the Trap event after 28 years.
The last time he was with the current president of SKOK, Dimitris Lordos, at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992, while two other participations had preceded him, in 1984 in Los Angeles, with Dimitris Papachrysostomou and Tassos Lordos.

"The Cyprus Olympic Committee warmly congratulates Andreas Makris, the federal coach Leontios Leontiou, and SKOK, for the new great success of the Cyprus Shooting," the relevant announcement of the JCC states.
