Damage to potato crops in Communities of the free province of Famagusta, was caused by the frost that created during the night.

As stated by Tassos Giapanis, General Secretary of Panagratikos, several potato cultivations in Communities of the free area of Famagusta "have been affected by the frost. The frost is from the weather conditions that are insured in OGA and in order to be compensated, 30% of the production must have been affected ".

He added that "with representatives of OGA we will visit within the next few days, the affected areas to conduct an on-site inspection and record the damage that is expected to appear within 2-3 days. After the recording of the losses, the producers who will be entitled to compensations, will receive them within the time frame provided by the regulations ".

Answering a relevant question, Mr. Giapanis said that "the OGA has been abolished, but the legal status remains in force until the new institution is voted".

Besides, Giannakis Gabriel, District Secretary of EKA Famagusta said that "the frost affected several potato crops, in areas from Sotira to Xylofagou and caused a lot of damage. The OGA must immediately visit the affected areas, record the damage and start the process of compensating the producers ".

He added that "producers throughout the adverse weather conditions that prevailed recently in Cyprus, watered their crops to save them from frost. However, we will have to wait to see the extent of the damage caused by the frost and in combination with the rains that fell and the watering that the producers did to their crops ".

For his part, Tassos Vardakis, Vice President of the Cyprus Greenhouse Association, said that "yesterday was a difficult night with several producers watering their plantations.
