The fullness of occupied Famagusta from tourism reached 80% last May, according to yesterday's publication by Halkin Sesi.

From January to May 2017, arrivals from Turkey to the occupied territories increased by 23% and in absolute numbers reached 293.000 Turkish tourists, while foreign tourists recorded an increase of 56% and 119.000 from 76.000.

According to the front page of Halkin Sesi on Friday (23/6), tourism this year records a record compared to the last 42 years. Hotel overnight stays increased by 20% in terms of visitors from Turkey while every record was broken by the increase in overnight stays of foreign tourists which reached 98% and from 346.000 to 683.000.

"Tourism is coming out of its shell and has started to fascinate" was the comment of the "Minister of Tourism", Fikri Ataoglou, adding that these numbers show the result that can be achieved when everyone works together.

In data given yesterday, it seems that in May the occupancy in Kyrenia reached 61%, in Famagusta 80% and in the area of ​​Trikomou 51%. According to Mr. Ataoglou, boarding houses in villages, ecological tourism and the creation of walking paths have helped to increase tourism. The quality of services, prices and security of hotels, he added, can be compared with those in countries such as Turkey, England, Israel and Germany.
