The story

As unbelievable as it sounds, the tragic story of Leventoni of Paralimni Kyriakos Petros-Psyllos is true. The missing national guard, who was preparing his papers to be fired, when Attila invaded the island and without wasting time rushed from Paralimni, where he was on leave, to thicken the ranks of the 231st Infantry Battalion, which was defending the homeland. the barbaric raider. He did not think of staying in his village, nor of enlisting in the unit closest to Paralimni, nor of going with his brother Spyros and his son-in-law Michalis, to appear in the same unit. He was a conscientious patriot and a disciplined soldier. His decision was final and irrevocable. He would go to 231, where he served, to fight on the side of his friends and soldiers. His Commander, Reserve Lieutenant Erastus Filippidis, spoke about the leventia of Kyriakos, whom he recognized as his best soldier. That is why she had sent him the dark day he disappeared, to go and see what was happening in Skylloura. A mission, his last that was not to be executed, because he never returned. His traces were lost in the barrage of mortars and machine guns of the Turks, who had occupied Skylloura. It was August 15th.

In his short biography unfolds his character and his devotion to duty. He went to his unit, fought valiantly until the moment when 231TP left their positions in front of the volume of Turkish tanks and the incessant blows of the Turkish air force, which threshed our skies undisturbed, spewing fire and iron, opening the way to the herds of invaders.

But let's take things from the beginning to see who Kyriakos was and how he found himself in his unit as soon as the invasion began.

Mention his short biography:

Kyriakos was born and raised in the city of Paralimni. He was the offspring of a large family. His parents are Petros Georgiou-Psyllos from Styllos, Famagusta. His mother was Irini Hatzispyrou Siapakta from Paralimni. Kyriakos was the fourth child in the family. He was born on April 16, 1954. His other siblings are. Chionoulla Chrysanthou, Spyros Psyllos, George Psyllos, Charoulla Parifti, Andreas Psyllos, Dimitra Voukali and Christina Psyllou.

He had attended the primary school of Paralimni. He did not go to Secondary Education due to the need for family income. So at the age of 13 he started working in construction. He enlisted in the National Guard at the age of 19, in January 1973. He had been suspended until the end of his term by his brother George, who was one year older. The dark days of 1974 found him in Paralimni with permission, to prepare his papers for early dismissal from the National Guard, after the government of Makarios then announced the reduction of military service to 14 months. Unfortunately, the coup took place and in 5 days followed the invasion of the Turks that enlivened the nightmare in the soul of every Greek in Cyprus. Supervision was now an urgent national need.

Apart from him, his brothers Giorgos, 21, Spyros, 23, and their son-in-law, Michalis, 24, would go to Patrida's call from Kyriakos' house. Kyriakos did not accept the requests of his brother, Giorgos, to appear together, because he was afraid of being considered a deserter if he did not show up at his unit. With half a heart, George took him to the place of departure of the "Land Rover" of the National Guard. Through them he would go to his unit, which was now in the front line. Raising his hand, in a greeting with pain in his soul, he did not know that it was the last time he saw her. At their home, the Levantine Mana with the lion's heart, after sending her Sunday to his duty, began with instructions and more care to help her other children to give their presence in the defense of our aching and already wounded Cyprus. .

Kyriakos arrived the same day in his company, in the 1st company of 231 TP. He took part in all the operations of his company, and where necessary gave his potential presence. On the 22nd of July, when the battles for occupation by the Turks were taking place at the Aetofolia outpost and he was in danger of being captured, their captain intervened with a few more soldiers and repulsed them, inflicting many losses on the Turks. Kyriakos was with them.

When later the outpost 26 was captured and a squad was sent and they helped to recapture the outpost, Kyriakos was present again.

When on the 6th and 7th of August in Agridaki the battalion of Kyriakos, the 1st battalion of 231TP received the ruthless bombardment of the Turks with mortars and artillery, and its losses were 4 dead and several wounded, the rest of the men Officers and soldiers did not , Kyriakos was among them. That is why his squadron rightly even now says that he was his best soldier.

42 whole years passed and Kyriakos did not return home. His name was written along with 1618 others in a long list of the hitherto unknown word MISSING 1974. His family searched in vain for him and waited for him. The father could not bear it and closed his eyes having taken with him the misery for his missing child on 20/2/1991.

The misery for her neglected lavender ruined the health of the tragic mother. And on January 17, 2000, she also passed away, taking with her, like his father, her great misery. The memory of Kyriakos' parents is eternal. The Homeland is grateful to them and honors them for the contribution of their child to the altar of freedom and its honor.

The hero's brothers were left waiting with half-extinguished hope for his return. They were burning with anxiety and relentless torturous questioning. What happened to Kyriakos, the great absentee of their family, how did the black disappear that summer of 1974, without giving any sign of life since then. About a year ago, the Missing Persons Commission of Inquiry called them to give this answer. The bones of their Beloved Kytiakos were found on the Lapatsa hill in the area of Kontemenou-Skylloura along with 22 other soldiers of the 286th MTP. After a fierce battle in the area, all our soldiers were killed without anyone being spared to say what exactly happened, and were left buried in the area. They left the CMP sad but also proud that Kyriakos was killed in the field of honor.

Evagoras Tyrimou

On Sunday, October 1, at 11:30, at the Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul in Avgorou, the funeral of the formerly missing Evagoras Tyrimos, missing since July 22, 1974, will be held.

His bones were found in the area of Aspri Moutti and were identified by DNA method. Former Government Spokesman Stefanos Stefanou will deliver a commemorative speech.

The story

Evagoras Tyrimou, son of Georgios and Panagiota, was born in the village of Avgorou on 2/08/1956. Evagoras was the seventh child in a row of eight brothers. Before enlisting in the army, he worked with his older brother in a tire shop in Famagusta.

In January 1974, he enlisted to do his military service, without even knowing what awaited him.

On July 20, 1974, with the landing of the Turks in Cyprus together with many others from the 399th Infantry Battalion in Bogazi where it belonged, after orders from superiors, they set out for Kyrenia and specifically for the Pentadaktylos mountain range where they had to face the Turkish conqueror under bad conditions.

On the night of July 21, they went up to the area of Alonagra where a great battle took place together with 19 other lads of his squad. It was not enough that they fell fighting under these adverse conditions, their bodies remained unburied on the hillside for 36 years. Until 2010 where the bones were reported by the DNA method.
