The University of Cyprus undertakes a research program to enhance the effectiveness of drugs aimed at combating cancer.

The amount for the research is 1,5 million euros and will be given by the European Research Council (ERC Starting Grants).

According to an announcement by the University, the funding was provided by the Lecturer of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Construction, Triantaphyllos Stylianopoulos. The specific funding concerns the conduct of research, with a horizon of five years, to find more effective treatment of solid cancer tumors.

The research deals with the combined use of specific drugs that modify the microstructure of the cancerous environment together with the usual chemotherapeutic methods, resulting in the optimization of their effectiveness. This combined method of cancer treatment is expected to lead to a whole new approach to the use of chemotherapy and the treatment of cancer in general.
