Cypriot composer creates pioneering works abroad

News, Little Secrets

All kinds of motor vehicles, planes and ships are used by a young Cypriot composer who has been working in Austria and Germany for the last ten years to create pioneering works...

The last one, in fact, which was presented in the central square of the German city of Mainheim last autumn, was characterized by German television as the project of the century after it used 80 cars of various types. The composer of modern music Marios Ioannou Ilias who comes from Kyrenia and resides in Paphos after the Turkish invasion, emphasized that he is interested in the combination of classical and contemporary music, while in recent years he has introduced innovative elements into his works using various motorized means.

The cycle of these projects, he said, began in 2003 with the "turns" project created specifically for the new factory of a large automobile manufacturer in the German city of Dresden. As the years went by, he continued to discover amazing textures through these "instruments", then using bicycles, motorcycles, airplanes and parts of ships in his musical works. All vehicles, said Marios Ioannou, who is currently in Paphos, play an important role in the development of musical works while simultaneously producing musical sounds.

Referring to the latter project, he noted that at the beginning no one could believe that 80 cars could produce sounds so that there could be a harmonious coherence between them but also be in a dialogue as he said with the symphony orchestra, two choirs, electronics and visual media. These vehicles have produced 800 different sounds. One hundred and twenty young people had been trained for a year especially for this occasion.

The Cypriot composer stated that there are two proposals, one from Russia and one from China, to re-present the specific work in Red Square and Hong Kong respectively, while he is willing to present a work in Cyprus as well.
